In-Home Maternity Session
Wow. I have so much to say about this one.
If I could paint a picture of my ideal client(s), it would be the Devroy family. They just get me. Each time I’ve taken their pictures they allow me to observe them as a family and truly document them with very little influence from me on posing. To me, this is what documentary photography is.
Scottie, their 2 year old daughter, was very shy and uncertain of me the last time we worked together. This time around, as soon as I took my camera out of my bag she said: “What that?” So, I sat down on the ground and showed her what I saw on my screen. I wanted her to understand that this weird looking device I was about to hold in front of her face was a camera, to take her picture. She sat with me and I allowed her to press the button to take pictures while I held the camera. The funny thing about this moment was that my camera was in continuous drive mode, which means it rapid-fire snaps pictures if you hold the button down. She put her little toddler finger on the button and shot about 30 photos. She giggled as the camera clicked away. I was so happy when I saw how much she loved it, we made a huge breakthrough right off the bat. From that point on Scottie didn’t fear me or my camera, and allowed me to take her picture throughout the session.
Photos shot by Scottie below.

Led by a toddler, the four of us moved throughout their home. Scottie showed me her favorite parts of each room in the house, like her parents’ bed, the crib for the new baby that used to be hers, the way she can jump from the ottoman in her room into her bed, and her play kitchen. I took their photos as they naturally interacted with each other with some guidance from me like “can you smile at me real quick?” or “Anthony can you hop in the frame?” We did what felt right, quickly moving on from what didn’t.
It truly felt like I was meditating as I was taking their photos. For two hours I was able to focus on what I love with no pressure from them. So in the zone and in my element. I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday morning.
Usually I have better self-control when selecting a few photos to include in each blog post but I just can’t help myself here. So, here’s a bunch-ton of my favorites from the Devroy Family. Enjoy <3
