Style Guide

Wardrobe:

Start by thinking about the vibe you want your photos to have. Don’t be afraid to go online and get some inspiration— Pinterest is your friend!

Next, think about how you plan to use your photos. Will they be on your social media pages? If so, do you have a certain aesthetic you tend to gravitate toward? Will you be hanging them around your home? Consider the colors you decorate with.

Samples from the Pic-Time print shop are included with your gallery delivery when you book a session with me. This service makes it easy to print your photos for your home, and the products are of great quality.

Pick a color scheme or pallet.

Start with two to three core colors, then add a pop of color if you wish.

Typically neutrals and earthy tones work best; avoid bright, fluorescent, and distracting colors/patterns as well as graphics. Subtle patterns are okay, but try to stick to one person wearing a pattern for a couple, or stick to one pattern and limit the number of people wearing that pattern for family photos.

If you are choosing stripes, they can sometimes create a moiré

Coordinate your outfit with your partner/group.

You don’t need to be twinning by any means, the key here is that your outfits are coordinating, not matching. This will help your final gallery and individual photos convey character and depth.

Last, add accessories and pops of color. Think jewelry, hats, hair bows/clips, suspenders, belts, and socks. For fall and winter sessions go for texture and layers— think scarves, mittens, vests, sweaters, flannels, and jackets.

To the left is a wedding guest who I call “Cool Wedding Guy.” I love the way he incorporated his style in his outfit.

Shoes matter. Bring different shoes with you for walking if needed, I want you to be comfortable for your session!

Tips:

  • Dress for the weather.

  • Wear clothes that fit you properly— avoid clothing that is too big or too small.

  • Wear proper underwear for your outfits. Consider lines from tank tops, bras, underwear, and socks. Ensure that your outfit will not show your bra/tank top straps.

  • Iron or steam your clothing beforehand to avoid wrinkles— they will be very distracting in your photos.

  • Take any phones/wallets/keys out of pockets during the session.

Hair/Makeup:

If you wear foundation, be sure to blend all the way down your neck so there isn’t a line. There’s no need to hire a hair and make up artist. Do what makes you feel your best and natural to your everyday look.

Plan ahead if you will be tanning. Avoid unwanted tan lines. If you decide to get a spray tan, try going with a natural airbrushed spray tan.

Consider bringing items that will add to your session.

Examples include a motorcycle, instruments, picnic, champagne, blankets, a bouquet, sports equipment, textbooks, polaroid cameras, etc. Pets are also welcome! If you bring a pet, please be sure to bring an extra person to your session so they can take care of them when they’re not in photos.

Items that may come in handy: bug spray, towels (helpful for sweat, sand, rain, etc.), a bag to help carry any extra/loose items.

Ultimately, the goal is for you to look and feel like yourself throughout the photos and in your session! There’s no need to go shopping for new clothes, bring items you would normally wear that you love! If you have questions about anything in this guide reach out to me, I’m always happy to help! :)
